We have come a long way since the series premier in 2011. Let’s take a look at the transformation of some of the most iconic characters of the series.

Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones ahead! Do not read if you haven’t had a chance, but plan to watch¬†the show! Unless you don’t mind spoilers of course ūüôā

From unknown to world renown, actors and characters on Game of Thrones changed dramatically in their own lives, as well as on the show.¬†With season six just around the corner (April 24, 2016), let’s go through the transition of some key characters on screen of the critically acclaimed show by HBO.

Here is Part 1 (of 3) of The Evolution of Game Of Thrones Characters. Part 2 & Part 3 are also live!

Jon Snow

We get a glimpse of Jon straight at the beginning of the series. It is understood he is Eddard Stark’s (Lord of Winterfell) bastard son. When Eddard goes to serve as hand of the king in King’s Landing, Jon decides to join the ranks of the Night’s Watch, partly because he feels he would never fit in with his half brothers and sisters, especially with their mother Catelyn, who never really approved of him living at Winterfell, in the background.

After joining the Night’s Watch, he quickly rose through the ranks, utilizing his charisma, honesty and leadership, up until he was voted Lord Commander of the Crows. In the Final episode of season five, Jon is stabbed to death by some of his so-called brothers of the Night’s Watch, who did not approve of him aiding their rivals, the Wildlings.

It remains to be seen if Jon Snow’s death will be permanent or not. Let’s say that many fans are not convinced, and neither am I.

Sansa Stark

Your typical “good girl”, Sansa first appears as a star-eyed girl in her early teens, believing in fairy tale romance and noble princes. She is the eldest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark (now deceased). She spends too much time trying to gain favor of Joffrey Baratheon, heir to the throne.

After she got what she wanted, she realized it was not what she wanted at all. She went from one horrible marriage to another, as Joffrey became king and was then poisoned to death, and she ended up with Ramsay Bolton, who is just as, if not more, sadistic than her previous partner.

Her fate isn’t exactly known at the end of season 5, but we know she (probably) managed to escape Ramsay’s clutches with Reek aka Theon Greyjoy.

Arya Stark

In stark contrast (no pun intended) to her sister Sansa, Arya despises her older sister’s idea of the ideal. Tomboyish in her behavior, she wants her father to respect her as a fighter, rather than a lady. Early on we get her glimpse of her abilities as she trains with her brothers. She later witnessed her father’s execution at the hands of king Joeffry, with her mother and older brother Rob doomed to a similar fate, in a scheme by house Bolton to control the north.

She later vows to kill anyone involved in the murders of her family.

But by entering the Faceless creed, she is not allowed revenge killings, and is punished after killing Meryn Trant by becoming blind. This blindness should be temporary though.

Bran Stark

Second youngest in the Stark clan, Bran was an avid climber, and loved hanging with his wolf, Summer. That is, until one fateful climb saw him witness something he was not supposed to. Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime going at it. Safe to say, they weren’t pleased, with Jaime then pushing the little boy off the tower to his supposed death.

But die he did not. When he awoke, he realized his climbing days were over by losing the ability to use his legs. However, he did find that his visions had meaning, and that they may be more than just visions.

Excluded from season 5, we know when he returns in season 6, his training as a Greenseer will be over, which makes him very powerful indeed.

Theon Greyjoy – Reek

Theon Greyjoy is a member of House Greyjoy and is the sole surviving son and heir apparent of Lord Balon Greyjoy. At the end of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Theon was taken as a hostage and ward to Lord Eddard Stark, though he was raised along side the Stark children almost like a brother.

After he allegedly kills Bran and Rickon Stark, he ends up in the hands of the Boltons, where his masculinity is taken from him, literally, and he serves Ramsey Bolton as Reek.

At the end of season 5, he¬†finally escapes Ramsay’s¬†sadistic grasp alongside¬†Sansa.
Will he ever regain his former identity of Theon? We hope to find out in season 6.

Tyrion Lannister

Immediately one of the favorites on GOT, Tyrion Lannister was known in the Seven Kingdoms for his love of whore houses, wine, and his quick wit.

Under more compelling inspection, Tyrion is unfolds into a¬†sympathetic, intelligent, and keen observer of others throughout¬†the series’ universe.¬†He is now revered as a powerful ally and capable opponent of all who crossed paths with¬†him, despite his size and the fact that his family, the Lannisters effectively disowned him.

After endless struggles, including having to kill his own father ,Tywin, he is now across the Narrow Sea, forced to help keep the political stability in Meereen after Daenerys Targaryen flees from the city on her dragon, Drogon.

Cersei Lannister

The queen in King’s Landing, she was busy dethroning her own husband, King Robert Baratheon for most of season one. When she did, Jeoffry, her lovechild through incest with her brother Jaime, and supposed heir to Robert, became king.

Things didn’t work out as she’d hoped, after Jeoffry was poisoned to death, but at least her younger son Tommen could take the throne for the time being.

The character was involved in one of the most powerful scenes on TV, after she was forced to the ‘Walk of Shame’, having confessed her sins to the Sparrows. She has a lot of work ahead of her in season 6, trying to reclaim her honor and a foothold on the throne.

Jaime Lannister

Jaime is thought to be a psychotic puppet, who will stop at nothing to have his way, as he serves in Robert Baratheon’s Kingsguard, and after his attempted murder of Bran Stark. We slowly begin to understand that the so-called King Slayer’s¬†behavior, is the direct result of his family, namely his sister and lover, Cersei, and his father Tywin, in their bid for ultimate supremacy.

After gaining some conscience, and losing a hand, Jaime still serves the whims of his sister, but also tries to be more empathetic towards others.

In season 5, he loses his daughter Myrcella, just when he thought he had her safe and sound, with her being poisoned by Ellaria Martell.
