[Spoilers] Watchers of Game of Thrones all knew Melisandre was hiding something, but none of them, including us, knew exactly what it was. One of her biggest secrets was revealed in Sunday’s premiere to Season 6.
The Red Woman, deciding now is as good a time as ever to finally reveal her true identity, takes off her choker and gives way to one of the most disturbing sights of the series, and we all know there are plenty to choose from.
We won’t go into too much detail regarding the scene, because by now everyone has dissected the scene from every angle and pried every nook.
We are, however, looking forward to sharing show star Liam Cunningham’s (Ser Davos Seaworth) thoughts. The masterless Seaworth is confident in The Red Woman’s abilities, but also isn’t aware of another secret Melisandre is keeping from him for the time being. Shireen’s death won’t sit well with Davos, and it will be interesting to see how the already tense relationship between the two moves forward.
Liam, speaking to Hollywood Reporter gave his input on the mess his character is in.
Davos and Melisandre have “both lost their reason for being on the show, with Stannis gone, and with what she’s done to Shireen”, Cunningham told The Hollywood Reporter. It leaves them as “strange bedfellows” – and now, after her vision of “a great battle at Winterfell with Jon Snow leading it” has proven false now he’s dead, “her world’s falling asunder. Then we see this remarkable moment, where her humanity comes out”.
“She spent a lot of time in a head cast. There was a huge amount of work put into getting the prosthetics done.”
“I’ve always wanted to do something like that. I’d love to get something like that done, to throw yourself into a character like that. But she thought it was very weird. I think she liked it a lot more than she thought she would — getting adorned. That stuff she wears … it must have taken six hours, or something like that to get it on.”
“This is what I love about the show: the remarkable moment where she just climbs into bed, with this very sad look in her eyes, recognizing that there’s something lost.”
Episode 2 – Home – airs May 1, 2016.
We’ll be watching.
