Rumors of a Jon Snow spin-off have been doing the rounds in the past week. We dive in to the probability of this kind of project actually happening.
The Mirror reported Sunday, that Jon Snow could get his own spin-off.
According to reports, which were not supported by concrete evidence, or names that could shed some light on the story, “exploratory talks” with Kit were held during the production of Season 6 of Game of Thrones.
A senior (unnamed) executive supposedly added
“Any spin-off built around Jon Snow, who is hugely popular with fans, would also undoubtedly involve other characters from the cast.”
“When the final season wraps next year, it’s going to be a case of figuring out who we want to join us for a new series and which of those cast members actually want to jump on board.”
They went so far as to claim that the new series will launch straight after the end of Season 7, if said season is the last for the series.
Considering it’s extremely difficult to pin down actors to another GoT project, it sure isn’t a safe bet that said spin-off will take off.
[UPDATE] May 26
Times of India reported that Kit Harington’s reps laid the rumor to rest.
HBO also insist that there are no prequels, sequels or spin-off planned. Michael Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly that if it were to happen, it would only be if show-runners and George RR Martin were “really feeling something”.
“Not knowing how this particular story ends, I don’t know,” Lombardo said. “There are plenty of characters, second characters whom you could build a world around. We’re always drawn to a strong creative vision but we are not going to do that unless we feel their passion.”
Show-runner Dan Weiss echoed Michael’s thoughts saying
“The job at hand is too enormous and challenging to be diffusing ourselves by thinking about spin-offs and theme park rides and ice ballets,” he said. “But if anybody has a good pitch for a Game of Thrones ice ballet, let us know.”
We are giving the rumor a no-nonsense 10/10 in our poo-meter
