The cast for Wolverine 3 is still not entirely set, but a big update comes from producer Simon Kinberg. He confirms that the project has begun filming, and a previously rumored Wolverine 3 rating is now official.
Kinberg confirmed to Collider, that Wolverine 3 (working title) will indeed be getting the rumored R-rating.
“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film,”
The cast currently consists of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, with rumors of mutant X-23 making an appearance in the film as well. James Mangold resumes his role as director for the series of Wolverine films, with the script written by David James Kelly.
The previous Wolverine film, also directed by Mangold, was treated to an R-rated cut on home media. This time around, perhaps following the immense success or R-rated Deadpool (which happens to feature a few X-Men), the studio took the leap to an R-rating straight with the theatrical release. This comes just after last week, we received news of another superhero/villain movie, Suicide Squad, received what some considered an underwhelming PG-13 rating.
Wolverine 3 is currently slated for a March 3, 2017 release.
