The Evolution of Game of Thrones Characters – Part 2 of 3

We have come a long way since the series premier in 2011. Let’s take a look at the transformation of some of the most iconic characters of the series.

From unknown to world renown, actors and characters on Game of Thrones changed dramatically in their own lives, as well as on the show.¬†With season six just around the corner (April 24, 2016), let’s go through the transition of some key characters on screen of the critically acclaimed show by HBO.

Here is Part 2 of The Evolution of Game Of Thrones Characters >> Part 1 for those who missed it.

Tommen Baratheon

In part 1, we learned how messed up the Lannisters are, so it wouldn’t surprise you that despite Tommen’s last name, he really is the son of siblings Cersei and Jaime Lannister, and not Robert Baratheon.

Following his older brothers’ (Jeoffry) untimely death, he was thrown into a crash course of ruling the seven kingdoms. His inexperience is well and truly exposed after his arranged marriage with Margaery of house Tyrell, evokes confusion for the young teen, as he is torn by his loyalty to his mother, Cersei, and his love for his wife.

At the end of season five, both of the aforementioned strong women in his life were imprisoned, each for different reasons, by the Sparrows. The religious fanatics themselves are at the peak of a religious uprising. Did we mention his sister was also poisoned/murdered? All these tribulations mean he really has his work cut out for him when we head into the new season.

Not easy being king. Does anyone still covet the throne?

Lancel Lannister

In the beginning we must admit that Lancel’s character did not look like one that would flesh out. How wrong were we. Starting as Robert Baratheon’s squire, he also had a hand in the king’s death by over indulging him with wine before going hunting.

Adding insult to injury, he then sleeps with his cousin, Queen Cersei, before “repenting”, and regaining some morals – becoming a worshiper/soldier for the religious cult of the Sparrows.

Aside from emblazoning the Seven Pointed Star on his forehead, he also seeks retribution against his former family of adulterers and murderers, and is spearing the attack on the royal family – his cousin Cersei included – before throwing her in jail.

Will he and the High Sparrow succeed in turning King’s Landing on its’ head? Only time will tell.

Brienne of Tarth

Recurring appearances in seasons 2 and 3, saw her eventually becoming a main character in seasons 4 and 5, becoming a fan favorite on the way. The sometimes naive, but also unusually tall and muscular woman, began by serving Renly Baratheon, brother of late king Robert, after winning a fight tournament held for the younger Baratheon.

After Renly’s death (not surprising anymore, is it), Brienne learns¬†that his brother Stannis, who also claims his right to the throne, was the conspirator in Renly’s demise by¬†Melisandre’s shadow. she joins Catelyn in support of her son, Robb, as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

At the end of season 6, after failing to keep anyone she was ordered to protect safe, she gets her revenge, when she meets Stannis on the battlefield and sentences him to death with a swift stroke of her word.

Ser Davos Seaworth

By his name, we infer that this is a skilled man while at sea. He serves claimant to the throne, Stannis Baratheon, thoughout the entire series. He has the strongest connection with Stannis’ daughter, Shireen, who teaches him how to read, while he serves as a mentor and a friend to her.

His world comes crashing down when his master, who he also refers to as his god, Stannis, is manipulated by the very manipulative Red Woman AKA Lady Melisandre, into burning Shireen alive on a stake to maintain his push at the Iron Throne. Why burn her? To satisfy the Lord of Light,¬†R’hllor,¬†of course!

With¬†Ser Davos still unaware of Shireen’s fate, and now master-less,¬†his future can go through many avenues.

The Red Woman – Lady Melisandre

Boy, have we heard a lot about his one so far. Pulling the strings of one of the most powerful men in the kingdom in Stannis, she is responsible for many deaths, including Stannis’ own brother and daughter, Stannis himself, and indirectly, his wife.

A Red priestess from Asshai, Melisandre worships the Lord of Light. Her visions have told her that Stannis is the true king and as his adviser, she has encouraged him to pursue the throne at all costs. Her motives are still not entirely clear, but she sure is a woman on a mission.

After her¬†entire plan backfires, she is now at The Wall, seeking council from the Crows. She probably had grand plans for Jon Snow, but it looks like that isn’t going to work either, right? She also has Ser Davos to face after Shireen’s death.

Samwell Tarly

Sam was introduced as a boy put in a situation against his will, admitting he is a coward when he first set foot in the Night’s Watch.

Jon Snow, who recognized some unique qualities in Sam, stood up for him time and again until he was accepted as a member of the Crows.

HBO game of thrones

Samwell shocked viewers as he was the first character on screen to kill a White Walker. Love and compassion also makes him brave, when he saves Gilly and her newborn, and even brings them beyond the wall and into his care in the Night’s Watch.

After Jon convinces Samwell to become a maester, Sam packs his things and goes to Old Town to study at the Citadel, not knowing the fate of his trusted friend. Season six should revisit his character often enough.

Gregor Clegane – The Mountain

Also known as the character with the most actor swaps on the series (Portrayed by three different individuals).

He is the head of House Clegane, minor vassals of House Lannister, the older brother of Sandor Clegane (you guessed it, also deceased), and a notoriously fearsome warrior with a tendency toward extreme violence. Due to his freakishly huge size, he is called “The Mountain That Rides” or more often simply “The Mountain”.

Many fans believe that after Gregor Clegane killed, while at the same time killing Oberyn Martell, The Mountain was resurrected by Cersei’s henchman Qyburn to be her un-dead champion against the Faith. We are pretty sure this henchman is the one referred to as¬†“Robert Strong”.

Loras Tyrell

The Knight of the Flowers, jousted with The Mountain at the Hand’s Tournament. He is the brother of Margaery, current wife of King Tommen. He was the former lover of Renly Baratheon prior to the shadow killing.

accused of homosexuality¬†the Sparrows decided he should be thrown in prison alongside his sister, for his “sins”.

Hopefully his character takes flight in the sixth season. It seemed likely at the beginning of the series that he will play a bigger role in proceedings. He’s still alive so there’s still hope.
