“There is no doubt – this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4.”
An article by Eurogamer claims that documentation given, has effectively set in stone the fact that a new, more powerful Playstation – code-named Neo – is due at some point.
This would be the first time that a mid-generation console has beefed specs when it comes to actual performance.
There have also been some blabbings of PSVR’s external processing box being integrated into the new PlayStation. There’s no indication that this is true, based on the documentation available to us.
The article also mentions that development kits and test kits will be sent out any time now, with a second-edition test kit following in June 2016.
Reports from GiantBomb’s sources, suggest that from as early as October 2015, games for Playstatio 4 are to ship with a ‘Base Mode’ current model, and ‘Neo Mode’ for the mid-gen iteration of the console. Earlier games can be patched to work with the new console.
Exact specs from GiantBomb:
Original PS4 CPU – 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz
NEO CPU – 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
Original PS4 Memory – 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s
NEO Memory – 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s
