Japanese Olympic Gymnast, Kohei Uchimura’s addiction to Pokemon GO made quite the dent in his wallet.
Uchimura made a costly mistake when he decided to start playing the game. This was not due to in-game purchases, but rather his cell provider has steep prices when roaming (the athlete is currently in Brazil for the Olympics). The cost amounted to $4,954, and the gymnastics superstar didn’t know how to bear his phone bill.
“500,000 yen ($4,954),” Uchimura told Kyodo News on Tuesday, shaking his head with embarrassment.
“He looked dead at the team meal that day,” teammate Kenzo Shirai added.
However, Uchimura was saved the huge expense after pleading with his cell phone provider to reduce the cost. After he explained the situation, the company agreed to charge him a flat rate of around $30 per day and waive the extra cost.
“I really lucked out,” Uchimura said.
Good that it didn’t cost him an arm and a leg. He’ll need those.

In other news, Pokemon GO is now officially available in South America. That means that local athletes in the Olympic village can now download the worldwide phenomenon straight from their local AppStores and PlayStores.
