A Pokemon GO player claimed that they caught a legendary Pokemon, Articuno, earlier this week. Players around the world called them cheaters, while others said that the claim was just plain false.
In truth, the player did have Articuno in their Pokedex, but it is still not clear how it got there. The news was confirmed when Pokemon GO developer, Niantic Labs, acknowledged that the legendary Pokemon did “accidentally” get in the game, even though Legendary Pokemon were still not officially introduced.
Niantic also provided a statement, in which they claim the problem had been rectified –
We recently noticed that a few Legendary Pokemon got into a few accounts when they shouldn’t have. To preserve the game’s integrity and as a measure of fairness, we have rectified the situation and revoked the legendary Pokemon from the Trainers’ accounts.
Whether the player cheated, or otherwise had been compensated is still unclear. This news comes in the wake of many changes that the augmented reality game has gone through recently. Among those changes were the removal of 3rd party app support and a change to the tracker system.
The update also introduced a host of bugs, like Pokemon that transform into entirely different Pokemon after being caught.
